Hurghada is the capital of Egypt's Red Sea Governorate, a resort city stretching about 36 km along the Red Sea coast with a cluster of nearby offshore islands, and one of Egypt's largest dive and watersports hubs.
Hurghada sits on the western shore of the Red Sea in Egypt's Red Sea Governorate, bordered by Ras Gharib to the north and Safaga to the south. What began as a small fishing settlement founded in 1905 grew from the 1980s onward into a major resort city, and the wider area now includes satellite resort towns such as El Gouna, Sahl Hasheesh, Soma Bay and Makadi Bay. The region's identity as a dive destination rests on its offshore islands (Giftun, Umm Qamar, Magawish, Abu Ramada, Abu Minqar, Fanadir, Shadwan) and associated reefs and wrecks.
