Erg Abu Ramada
Also known as: Camel Reef
At the edge of a wide sandy shelf east of Abu Ramada, three ergs stand in a line from the largest in the south to the smallest in the north. Their north sides, facing the prevailing current, carry a particularly dense cover of purple soft corals, and small caves open on the east side of the largest erg and the north side of the middle one. Guides advise skipping the drop-off further east and spiralling up around the towers instead. A cloud of anthias surrounds the ergs, with moray eels, napoleon wrasse, tuna, barracuda and schools of unicornfish around them. The current can change from calm to very strong.
