Carless Reef
Also known as: Careless Reef
Carless Reef rises from deep water as a plateau, mostly between 12 and 25 m, with two ergs standing on it: the larger to the north-west and the smaller to the south-east. Around them grows a coral garden that swarms with fish, and the plateau edge drops off steeply into deep water. With no lagoon or other shelter, the site is exposed to waves and to currents that are hard to predict, which has kept it less crowded than other reefs. Divers either drift along the eastern drop-off to the southern erg or circle both ergs from the moorings in a figure of eight. Large moray eels, turtles and whitetip reef sharks are typical, while tuna, giant trevallies and big groupers patrol the wall.
