Marsa Alam lies in southeastern Egypt's Red Sea Governorate, 274 km south of Hurghada. Modern development began in 1995, and growth accelerated after Marsa Alam International Airport opened in 2003. The neighbouring Wadi El Gemal National Park features coral reefs, mangroves and dugongs. Marsa Alam is recognized among global recreational diving destinations, alongside kitesurfing and desert safari tourism.
