Ben El Gebel

Even when waves pound the outer reef, the lagoon stays calm, and divers leave it through a channel at about 8 m. The three nearest ergs carry beautiful gorgonians on their north sides, while the farthest erg is rarely visited, rich in fish and has overhangs veiled in glassfish. Current runs through the strait much of the time, and divers who stray too far out have surfaced at neighbouring Banana Reef by mistake. Painted triggerfish, puffers, napoleon wrasse and snappers live on the reef, and anemonefish gather in large groups. Barracuda, whitetip reef sharks and eagle rays pass on the far north side.
