Sardinia

Italy

Large Mediterranean island ringed by marine protected areas, offering granite shoals with big groupers, the Nereo sea cave at Capo Caccia, red gorgonian walls and historic wrecks, with dive centres all around the coast.

Sardinia is Italy's second largest island and one of the Mediterranean's most varied dive destinations. Most of the best diving lies inside regulated protected areas: Capo Caccia-Isola Piana near Alghero with its limestone walls and the Nereo cave, one of the largest submerged marine caves in the Mediterranean; the La Maddalena Archipelago National Park with the granite pinnacle Secca di Washington; Tavolara-Punta Coda Cavallo near Olbia with the Secca del Papa and the KT12 wreck; Isola dell'Asinara; Penisola del Sinis-Mal di Ventre; and Capo Carbonara at Villasimius with Serpentara and the Loredan wreck. In these areas diving takes place from fixed moorings with authorised dive centres. Further wrecks include the tanker Romagna off Capo Sant'Elia near Cagliari. The main season runs from May to October. Source: Wikipedia, SardegnaTurismo, PADI, SubAquaDive Villasimius
