Grotta dei Cervi
Also known as: Deer Cave · Deers' Cave · Cervi Cave
A tunnel runs through the Punta Giglio massif from about 18 m on the northern side to an exit at about 8 m on the southern side. A side tunnel leads to an inner chamber where divers can surface, and in a small niche calcite has preserved bones of Megaloceros cazioti, a deer that lived here when the area was dry land between about 120,000 and 75,000 years ago. The fossil deposit was found by the Alghero diver Marco Busdraghi. The cave holds little marine life apart from brown meagre, and bats sometimes rest on the ceiling of the air chamber. Large groupers are often met at the southern exit.
