Réunion Marine Reserve (West Coast)

Réunion

Protected west coast of Réunion from Cap La Houssaye to L'Étang-Salé, with the island's fringing coral reef, volcanic drop-offs, lava tubes and wrecks, dived year-round from Saint-Gilles and Saint-Leu.

The National Marine Nature Reserve of Réunion was established in 2007 and protects about 35 km² along 40 km of the west coast, from Cap La Houssaye in Saint-Paul to L'Étang-Salé. It contains the island's 20 km of fringing coral reef and all its lagoons except Saint-Pierre. Most dive centres are based at the marinas of Saint-Gilles-les-Bains and Saint-Leu, which together reach well over thirty sites. Typical dives include the Passe de l'Ermitage with its drop-offs, caves and canyons, the turtle site Trois Bassins, volcanic cliffs and lava tubes at Cap La Houssaye and the deep wall at Pointe au Sel. Wrecks such as the Hai Siang at 54 m and the Antonio Lorenzo attract experienced divers. Water temperature is 25 to 28 °C, dolphins are seen all year and humpback whales roughly from June to October.
