Grottes du Portail

Also known as: Les Grottes du Portail · Le Portail

Les Grottes du Portail is less a single cave than a remarkable maze of tunnels and caverns carved by the sea into old lava. It used to be known as the shark cave, as nurse sharks like to rest inside. Plongée Salée describes a series of small drop-offs with large cave networks and lava tubes that it calls unique on the west coast. Lobsters and other cave-dwelling crustaceans live in the dark, while groupers, porcupinefish, moray eels and rays are seen around the site. More experienced divers can begin on an arch at about 31 m.
