Yap State, the westernmost state of the Federated States of Micronesia, bordering Palau to the southwest and Guam to the north, consists of Yap Proper's four main islands (Rumung, Maap, Gagil-Tamil, Yap) plus 134 smaller islands; total state area is 119.54 km2. Yap is internationally known for year-round manta ray diving: in 2008 its legislature protected resident manta habitat out to 12 miles offshore.
