Zeeland in the south-western Netherlands is the country's main sea-diving area. Divers concentrate on two water bodies on either side of the island of Schouwen-Duiveland. The Oosterschelde (Eastern Scheldt), protected as Oosterschelde National Park since 2002 and covering about 37,000 hectares, is a tidal inlet behind the Delta Works where strong currents mean dives are planned around slack tide. The pillars of the Zeeland Bridge are densely overgrown with marine life, and cuttlefish arrive in spring to lay their eggs. The Grevelingen, closed off from the North Sea in 1971 and kept saline through a sluice in the Brouwersdam, has hardly any current and suits beginners and night dives, with sites such as the wreck by the Scharendijke pier. Scharendijke is the hub for local dive centres. Source: Wikipedia, Zeeland.com, Duikeninzeeland.nl
