Antonio Lorenzo

Also known as: Épave Antonio Lorenzo · L'Antonio Lorenzo

The Antonio Lorenzo, a 53 m Chilean longliner, was caught fishing toothfish illegally off the Kerguelen Islands in 1998 and towed to Réunion. When it threatened to sink in port, the regional diving federation proposed turning it into a dive site, and it was sunk off Pointe des Châteaux on 16 December 1999. The wreck rests in one piece on its port side, with rudder and propeller lying apart. Its holds are easy to enter and can be swum through from one to another. Snappers, frogfish, lionfish, leopard moray eels and stingrays live on and around it, and studies showed it works well as an artificial reef.
