Raja Ampat is a vast archipelago of more than 1,500 islands, cays, and shoals off the Bird's Head Peninsula of New Guinea, widely regarded as an epicentre of the Coral Triangle's marine biodiversity.
Raja Ampat is an archipelago in Southwest Papua province, Indonesia, comprising more than 1,500 small islands, cays, and shoals around the four main islands of Misool, Salawati, Batanta, and Waigeo. It lies within the Coral Triangle, an area recognized for containing the richest marine biodiversity on Earth, and is home to more than 600 species of hard corals, about 75% of the world's known coral species. Several marine areas were designated as the Raja Ampat Marine Recreation Park in 2009, protecting waters around Salawati, Batanta, Waigeo, Misool, and the Sembilan Islands. In 2025, the islands were also designated a UNESCO biosphere reserve.
