The Mediterranean coast of the Var and Alpes-Maritimes with the Hyères Islands and Port-Cros National Park, known for deep gorgonian-covered wrecks such as the Donator and Togo and grouper-rich protected reefs.
The Côte d'Azur has no official boundaries; it runs from the Esterel massif to Menton, and in wider use west to Saint-Tropez, Toulon and the Hyères Islands of Porquerolles, Port-Cros and Levant. Port-Cros National Park, created in 1963, was the first park in Europe to protect land and sea together and covers about 2,900 hectares of sea around Port-Cros, Porquerolles and smaller islets. Sites such as La Gabinière are known for barracuda and large groupers. Between Porquerolles and Port-Cros lies the Donator, a 78 m cargo ship sunk by a mine in 1945 at 35 to 52 m, and in Cavalaire Bay the Togo, sunk in 1918 at about 45 to 67 m. Dive centres operate from Giens, Hyères, Bormes-les-Mimosas, Cavalaire and other ports along the coast. Source: Wikipedia, Hyères Tourist Office, Provence Méditerranée, SCUBA Travel
