Les Péniches d'Anthéor
Also known as: Les Péniches
The two barges were sunk by a British torpedo in 1944 while carrying munitions and supplies for the German forces. The explosion destroyed much of them, but the front half of one barge still sits upright on its keel near 28 m, with the rudder, propeller, rails and girders around it. In 1998 the French navy made several hundred shells safe and stacked them in neat piles that are now part of the scenery. The wreck is home to impressive conger and moray eels, and divers who arrive first may see shy groupers. A small cold current is often felt just above the site, and the dive can be sporty when the current runs.
