La Chrétienne
Also known as: La Balise de la Chrétienne
The Chrétienne rock almost reaches the surface and is now marked by a beacon. Over the centuries it wrecked thirteen ships, mostly Roman-era vessels carrying wine or brine amphorae from Italy, Spain and North Africa, which makes it a cradle of underwater archaeology. Between about 12 and 22 m the bottom is strewn with amphora fragments, and excavations in 1996 also found Greek remains from the 6th century BC. An arch covered with yellow encrusting anemones and sponges opens to the east, with rainbow wrasse, scorpionfish, gobies and blennies. The dive is easy and suited to level 1 divers.
