Corsica

France

Mediterranean island with granite and limestone coasts, the Scandola World Heritage reserve and the Lavezzi Islands in the Bouches de Bonifacio, famous for groupers, barracuda, red coral and wrecks.

Corsica is a French Mediterranean island of about 8,680 km2, separated from Sardinia by the Strait of Bonifacio. Dive centres operate from most ports, including Calvi, Île-Rousse, Saint-Florent, Ajaccio, Porto, Bonifacio and Porto-Vecchio. In the north-west, the Scandola Nature Reserve, part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Gulf of Porto, protects cliffs and waters with red coral, groupers and gorgonian walls; only approved centres may dive there. In the south, the Lavezzi Islands and the Bonifacio cliffs lie within the Bouches de Bonifacio marine reserve, where the shoal known as Mérouville hosts a resident group of dusky groupers between 16 and 30 m. Other dives include a B-17 bomber wreck at 27 m off Calvi and the Cerbicale islands near Porto-Vecchio. The season runs from April to October.
