Marovo Lagoon in the New Georgia Islands, Western Province, is the largest double-barrier enclosed lagoon in the world and a popular diving destination known for its reef system and biodiversity.
Marovo Lagoon is located between the islands of Vangunu and Nggatokae and covers an area of 700 km2 protected by a double barrier reef system. Designated the Marovo Lagoon World Heritage Area in recognition of its high biodiversity, coral surveys have recorded live coral cover of up to 49% at some sites. The lagoon is described as a tourism hub attracting divers from Australia, New Zealand, Europe and the United States.
