Johnson's Rock barely breaks the surface off the west end, but around it spreads a large reef of pinnacles, boulder fields, crevices and small caves. Some pinnacles rise as vertical faces about 12 m from the bottom, and smaller kelp-topped pinnacles lie closer to shore. Red and golden gorgonians, many covered in zoanthids, and swirls of fish make it a strong wide-angle site, while the nudibranchs draw macro photographers. Because fewer boats visit, fish such as horn sharks and rubberlip perch are larger and more numerous, and a large harbor seal has been reported in the kelp. The area is exposed to the north-west wind and can have strong currents.
