Palolo Deep Marine Reserve
Also known as: Palolo Deep
The reserve lies at Vaiala Beach, within walking distance of the centre of Apia. From the shore, divers and snorkellers swim across the shallow reef flat and follow a strip of coral to the point where the lagoon falls away into a blue hole ringed by coral. Staghorn coral and colourful reef fish surround the drop-off, with the occasional octopus and passing turtle. The site has changing rooms, showers and snorkel gear hire, and visits are best planned for high tide to avoid damaging the coral when crossing the flat. Dive guides differ on its suitability: some present it as an easy intro dive, others stress its deeper drop-offs for experienced divers.
