Secca d'Africa

Also known as: Secca Africa

The shoal sits off the western side of the island near Punta Cavazzi and Punta Spalmatore, a short boat ride from the harbour. Its rocks form a maze of canyons, crevices and passages, including an arch with two openings and a tunnel that rises towards the light. A family of brown meagre is a well-known sight in one of the cracks, and shy groupers, parrotfish, bream and wrasse fill the shallower part. Close by, an underwater archaeological route shows the remains of Roman and Byzantine anchors at around 10 m. Shallow routes suit less experienced divers, while deeper canyons and a wall continue below 30 m.
