Pemuteran Biorock

After the 1998 El Nino damaged the reef, Pemuteran became in 2001 the site of the first artificial reef regeneration project in Bali, with over 40 grid-like structures charged from shore. Live corals attached to them have grown remarkably, and the local village guards the area as a no-fishing zone. The structures stand on white sand and carry hard and soft corals, sea fans, tunicates and sponges. Signal gobies, eels, small rays, lionfish, frogfish, leaf scorpionfish, Pegasus sea moths and finger dragonets live among them. The water is usually warm and calm with almost no current, although visibility can be low and the sea wavy from December to March.
