Valiant Wreck

The Valiant was a private luxury yacht that caught fire off Avalon in 1930 and sank after burning for days. The wreck lies upright on sand just west of the Casino Point dive park, roughly perpendicular to the shore, with the stern the shallower end and the bow in the deepest water. Because it sits in an active mooring area, divers must get permission from the Avalon harbour master before diving it. The corroded hull is overgrown with invertebrates and gorgonians and holds sheephead, kelp bass and rockfish, with occasional giant black sea bass or bat rays. A legend of diamonds lost in the fire and never recovered adds to its appeal.
