At El Altar de Virginia the walls are less steep than elsewhere, and sunlight has allowed corals to build broad terraces, one of the few coral reefs at Malpelo. Reef fish such as surgeonfish, angelfish, damselfish and snappers are therefore more common here than at other sites of the island. Small groups of hammerheads split from the big schools to visit its cleaning stations in only around 10 m of water. The barnacle-covered boulders are known for aggregations of fine-spotted moray eels, and schools of young barracuda, eagle rays and resting whitetip reef sharks are regular sights.
