Apo Island Marine Sanctuary
Also known as: Marine Sanctuary
The sanctuary was created in the early 1980s together with the island's fishing community and became a model for community-led reef protection across the Philippines. Typhoons Sendong in 2011 and Pablo in 2012 destroyed most of its coral, and it has been closed to divers since so the reef can recover. New corals are settling and schools of juvenile jacks now use the protected water as a nursery. Visitors must follow local rules on which areas are open.

Vote for the name divers really use. Divers who logged a dive here count double. The votes are counted every night, and the main name only changes when another name has led clearly for a week.
