Isthmus Reef lies just south-west of Bird Rock in Isthmus Cove, its shallowest point marked by a post with a sign and light. The reef combines shallow kelp-covered plateaus with ledges, undercuts and vertical walls on the west, north and east sides. Small caves hold lobsters, and large horn sharks rest in the crevices. Nudibranchs and juvenile sheephead and garibaldi make it a good macro site, and the kelp offers wide-angle scenes. Little current and calm water make it one of the island's easiest dives, which is why many certification classes come here.
