Genova Wreck
Also known as: Genova · Vapore di Portofino
Locals call the wreck the 'steamer of Portofino'; it was carrying guns and other war material from Genoa to La Spezia and took about eight hours to sink, with only one sailor killed. Its cargo was salvaged between the wars, an operation that cost a diver his life. The hull, about 104 m long, lies in sailing position with the bow facing east. Divers can see the crew quarters in the bow, the two boilers through an opening near the stump of the funnel, cargo derricks, many portholes and the large rudder and propeller. Visibility changes constantly because bottom currents stir up the silt, and Portofino Divers reports damage from cruise ship anchors.
