Cristo degli Abissi

Also known as: Christ of the Abyss

The bronze figure, more than 2.5 m tall, was set on the seabed in 1954 on the initiative of diving pioneer Duilio Marcante, and Just Gotta Dive notes that it stands near the place where Dario Gonzatti died in 1947. After restoration it was put on a new base in 2004. Around the statue the ground is fairly flat and strewn with algae-covered boulders; damselfish often circle the head and banded seabream gather near the base. To the west the bottom slopes away over patches of Posidonia, and along the wall at around 30 m cracks are full of life. Mooring chains mark the limit of the area that may be explored.
