Los Islotes
Los Islotes lies about half a mile off the northern tip of the Espiritu Santo archipelago, around 60 to 90 minutes by boat from La Paz. The colony of California sea lions is the main draw; operators estimate it numbers anywhere from about 200 to over 900 animals. Juveniles tug at divers’ fins and spin around them, while the large bulls can become territorial during mating season. Divers can pass through the arch, where sea lions tend to gather, and explore caves and walls covered in sea fans and golden cup corals. Schools of sardines, king angelfish and yellow surgeonfish complete the picture, and the protected no-fishing status keeps fish life rich.
