Sciara del Fuoco
Also known as: La Sciara di Fuoco
Off the Sciara del Fuoco a lava plateau at about 12 m drops along a wall of sharp-edged volcanic rock coloured by Astroides, anemones and sponges, with red gorgonians deeper. Below, black sand slides steeply towards the deep Tyrrhenian basin, more than 3000 m down. Groupers, white seabream, brown meagre and moray eels live on the wall, and the sand at its foot has flatfish, cuttlefish and sometimes electric rays. The unusual Stylocidaris pencil urchin hides in the crevices.
