Kavieng is a diving region at the northern tip of New Ireland, Papua New Guinea, known for current-swept passages, coral reefs, and WWII-era wrecks where the Pacific Ocean meets the Bismarck Sea.
Kavieng is the capital of New Ireland Province and sits at Balgai Bay, on the northern tip of New Ireland island. Numerous islands lie offshore in the strait between New Ireland and New Hanover, and currents through this gap are reported to reverse direction several times a day, creating strong drift and passage diving. The area is part of the Coral Triangle and is known for coral reefs, walls, and drop-offs alongside plane and shipwrecks.
