Catalina Wreck

Also known as: PBY Catalina

The Catalina had refuelled at Kavieng with other RAAF flying boats on the way to attack Truk when a wing bomb detonated, killing the crew. The heavy parts, above all the engines, sank together and still stand proud on the seabed, with wing and undercarriage parts close by and further debris scattered around. The wreck was found decades later by Rod Pearce. Batfish, sweetlips, nudibranchs and leaf scorpionfish live on the wreckage. Because of its position at the harbour entrance it is best dived on an incoming tide.
