Secca del Papa

The shoal lies a few hundred metres off the eastern tip of Tavolara, inside the marine protected area around Tavolara. A sandy channel divides it into Papa 1, the shallower part with its own mooring buoy, and the deeper Papa 2 to the north. The north face is steep and dense with Paramuricea gorgonians whose colours range from red to yellow, often on the same colony. Groupers are very numerous, brown meagre gather in the hollows, and dentex let divers come close, while amberjack, bonito, mobula rays and sunfish appear at times. Because of the depth it is reserved for advanced divers, and Nitrox is recommended.
