Great Northern Wreck

Also known as: The Great Northern

The Great Northern was built in 1870 and sank in 1902; over more than a century it has turned into a thriving artificial reef. Parts of the ship can still be recognised, and the surrounding coral is described by ScubaReef as some of the best in Zanzibar. Leaf fish, lionfish and geometric morays live on the wreck, and macro fans find many shrimps and pipefish. Anemonefish guard their anemones fiercely. Because it is so shallow, beginners and snorkellers can see it well.
