Bawe Island

Also known as: Bawe

Bawe lies just in front of Stone Town and is ringed by reef. ScubaReef dives a busy coral wall on the north side, where cuttlefish, morays and seahorses hide among blue sponges and rainbow runners and batfish pass in the blue. The south side has a long shallow reef ideal for snorkellers and beginners, with deeper bommies, titan triggerfish and big barrel sponges on sand patches. Acropora, staghorn and brain corals are typical, and stingrays and green turtles are regular visitors.
