Complesso dell'Accademia
Also known as: Grotta dell'Accademia
Complesso dell'Accademia is a group of shallow caves within the Pastizza site near Ustica harbour. Its main chamber, the Academy Cave, is large, lit through openings in the rock and relatively easy to explore.
Orca Diving describes four separate caves here, all shallow and each with its own character. The Academy Cave has an entrance at about 8 to 10 m and a large chamber whose rising floor Evasioni Blu compares to a lecture hall, with light falling through holes in the walls and roof. A circular opening known as the Washing Machine leads through a narrow passage taken one diver at a time. The Cave of the Saint can even be visited by snorkellers and holds an air pocket where a statue of Saint Bartholomew stands. Small groupers, juvenile conger eels, crustaceans and nudibranchs shelter in the caves.
