9 Mile Reef

Also known as: Nine Mile Reef · 9 Mile

9 Mile Reef is the farthest reef dived from Sodwana and is only visited on flat seas, at extra cost. Its centrepiece is the Green Tree, a green tree coral about 2.5 m high standing on its own ledge and wrapped in goldies, which PADI says is nicknamed the Christmas Tree. The northern part has the best topography, with caves, overhangs, swim-throughs and drop-offs adorned with black coral and sea fans. Big potato bass and brindle bass, moray eels and several kinds of turtle are seen, and reef sharks are common. The critically endangered bowmouth guitarfish has also been recorded here.
