Orizaba

Also known as: E/S Orizaba · ES Orizaba · SS Orizaba

Built at Deutsche Werft in Hamburg in 1939 for the Hamburg America Line, Orizaba was a 121 m turbo-electric cargo ship. Held in Spain by the British blockade, she slipped out in February 1940 to reach Germany via Iceland and Norway, but grounded on the skerry despite having a pilot aboard. Her crew took to the lifeboats and was rescued by the Finnish steamer Margareta. A salvage firm later blasted the wreck, though the bow, the stern and a large part of the deck survive, with pieces of the superstructure resting next to the hull. The bow rises to roughly 25 m and the deepest point at the stern is around 42 m. Old seine ropes and nets are snagged on the wreck, which calls for caution.
