Kailua Pier
Also known as: Kailua Bay
Kailua Pier sits in the middle of historic Kailua-Kona and is also the start and finish of the Ironman World Championship. Divers swim out to the last buoy and drop onto a sand patch, then follow a coral slope that meets the sand at about 9 to 11 m. A small coral island called Treasure Island lies a short way out over the sand. Eagle rays cruise over the sand, turtles rest in the shallows, and it is one of the few shore dives with teardrop butterflyfish; huge bait balls of akule are often seen. Divers must stay on the swim side of the lane markers because the south side is an active boat channel.
