The Cauldron

Also known as: Shotgun · The Passage

The dive usually begins in a calm coral garden with gorgonian fans and bommies full of glassfish, where frogfish, scorpionfish and pipefish hide. The bottom then drops into the cauldron, a deep sandy bowl whose walls are covered in fans and soft corals. At its end a shallow, narrow pass funnels the tidal flow and propels divers out like a shotgun into a series of channels and small canyons. Manta and devil rays come to these channels to feed and get cleaned, and trevally, snappers, reef sharks and turtles are common. The dive ends drifting gently over a shallow coral garden on the far side of the passage.
