Sombrero Reef
Also known as: Sombrero Key Reef · Sombrero Key
Sombrero Reef's coral fingers rise towards the surface between sandy grooves, so snorkellers can stay over the shallow spurs while divers follow the channels. The 142-foot iron lighthouse was completed in 1858 under George Meade and dominates the site. Parrotfish, yellowtail and grey snapper, barracuda, stingrays, eagle rays, nurse sharks and turtles are common, and protection from fishing keeps fish numbers high. Mooring buoys lie on the south side of the lighthouse.
