Looe Key Reef
Also known as: Looe Key
Coral fingers extend seaward from Looe Key, separated by white sand channels that make navigation easy. The main reef lies between about 7 feet at its crest and 30 feet at the sand line, while a deeper, gently sloping area with sponges and soft corals continues further out, where currents can be strong. More than 150 fish species are reported: parrotfish and surgeonfish on the north side, barracuda and jacks over the reef top, grunts, butterflyfish and angelfish on the crest. Reef sharks, spotted eagle rays, nurse sharks and resident goliath groupers are regular visitors. The reef is a sanctuary preservation area inside the Looe Key Management Area, which also includes a research-only zone closed to the public.
