Coffins Patch

Also known as: Coffins Patch Reef

Coffins Patch is said to be named after a ship carrying coffins that struck the reef, although no coffins were ever found. The 248-acre area holds several distinct patches, including The Stake, marked by an angled steel post, and The Aquarium. Boulder, brain and star corals, sea fans and sponges shelter tangs, grunts, snapper, angelfish, groupers, lobsters, moray eels and resting nurse sharks, and stingrays glide over the sand. The area was historically known for pillar coral at its west end. Currents are usually minimal, which makes it a common training and beginner site; the deep Thunderbolt wreck lies close by.
