Thunderbolt

Also known as: Thunderbolt Wreck

Built in 1942 as the Major General Wallace F. Randolph to lay and tend coastal minefields, the ship later carried out lightning research for Florida Power and Light, which gave it its name. It was sunk as an artificial reef in March 1986 and sits upright and intact on sand. The large cable reel on the bow, the superstructure and the two bronze propellers are the main features, and the cut-away aft section allows light penetration. Big goliath and black groupers, schools of amberjack and, in summer, tarpon are reported. Bottom time at this depth is short, so many divers pair it with a shallow reef such as Coffins Patch.
