Duane

Also known as: USCGC Duane · USCG Duane

The Duane served in the Second World War, helped sink the U-boat U-77 in 1943 and took part in several rescues before it was decommissioned in 1985 as the oldest active US military vessel. It was scuttled on 27 November 1987 and settled upright on the sand. The mast and crow's nest start at about 60 feet, the bridge and superstructure follow, and the main deck lies at about 100 feet. Large barracuda hover around the crow's nest, and goliath groupers, jacks and occasional bull sharks are reported. Its position outside the reef line brings clear water but also strong currents.
