Benwood

Also known as: SS Benwood · Benwood Wreck

The 360-foot Benwood was steaming without lights because of the U-boat threat when it collided with the Robert C. Tuttle in April 1942 and was run aground. Salvage, demolition and later use as a bombing target left the hull scattered, with the bow as the most intact part. Its steel frames now form an artificial reef covered in corals and sponges, home to schools of grunts, snapper and goatfish, moray eels, lobsters and glassy sweepers. The modest depth and absence of overhead structure make it a common first wreck dive for open water divers. The wreck is part of NOAA's Florida Keys Shipwreck Trail.
