Christ of the Abyss
Also known as: Christ of the Deep · Key Largo Dry Rocks
The statue is a cast from the same mould as Il Cristo degli Abissi off Genoa and was donated by the Cressi family through the Underwater Society of America before it was placed on the reef in the 1960s. It stands on a concrete pedestal in about 25 feet of water, close enough to the surface to be seen by snorkellers on calm days. The surrounding dome-shaped reef breaks the surface at low tide on its landward side and has spur-and-groove formations with large brain corals and sea rods. Stingrays and spotted eagle rays are often seen over the sand at the edge of the reef. The site lies in the Key Largo Dry Rocks-Grecian Rocks Sanctuary Preservation Area.
