Tassie III

Also known as: Tassie Wreck · Main Beach Wreck - Tassie III

Tassie III was a 120-tonne steel vessel requisitioned by the US Army that sheltered in Byron Bay in June 1945, dragged its anchor and beached; after being refloated it was washed against the old jetty, whose piles pierced the hull. After salvage work began in 1946, the ship and the remaining ammunition were blown up where it lay. Today its remains rest among the stumps of the old jetty next to a large seaweed garden off Main Beach. Turtles, shovelnose rays, octopus, nudibranchs, eels and crayfish live around it. Entry is from the beach in calm weather, when surf and stirred-up sand stay low.
