Secca del Turco
Also known as: Turco's Pinnacle
Sponges, bryozoans, fan worms and tunicates cover the walls, and the coralligenous growth glows in torchlight. Diving in Elba reports more than twenty groupers around the shoal, together with huge dentex and often a dense barracuda school. Amberjacks and tuna pass in the blue, and in April blotched picarels gather on the top to spawn. It can be reached from the wall of Punta del Turco or by anchoring near the shoal. Frequent strong currents and the depth make it a dive for experienced divers only; afterwards boats often visit Cala Rossa, part of the old volcanic crater.
