Richelieu Rock
Also known as: Plo Nam
Richelieu Rock is a submerged, horseshoe-shaped pinnacle far from any island, which makes it a magnet for marine life in an otherwise deep sea. It belongs to Mu Ko Surin National Park and is visited from Khao Lak by speedboat day trips or, more often, by liveaboards that dive it several times in one day. Whale sharks and manta rays pass by regularly in season, while schools of barracuda and trevally hunt in the currents around the rock. The reef itself is just as rewarding for macro lovers, with seahorses, ghost pipefish, frogfish and harlequin shrimp hiding among soft corals. Currents can be strong and the site is not meant for beginners, but the rock offers enough shelter to plan dives around it.
